INFRASTRUCTURE SECTOR
Ensure better movement of people and goods on both interurban and rural roads.
Raising the level of investment in road and urban infrastructure was another major focus of the C2D, taking into account the important needs in this area and the need to promote socio-economic activities in rural and urban areas. In addition to the strategies of donors such as the European Union targeting major regional roads, the choice was made in the first C2D to meet the pressing needs of opening up rural areas, which are essential for the creation of economic activities. Infrastructure services promote the ability of households to access markets and contribute to economic activity and thus contribute to poverty reduction. The strategic orientations of the road sub-sector have focused on the rehabilitation and maintenance of the existing network, its extension and development and the implementation of the necessary accompanying measuresThus, in the first C2D Road programme, the choice was made to invest in the improvement of interurban roads and rural tracks in the coastal regions. The second C2D, for its part, gave priority to the contribution for the construction of the second bridge over the Wouri, which is of undeniable interest for the development of the country's economic capital.
In addition, the challenge of urban development and land use planning has had to be met in a country that has one of the highest rates of urbanization on the continent. It was therefore necessary not only to support the growth of cities and contribute to making them centres of production and consumption conducive to the development of the industrial sector, but also to promote the emergence of peripheral conurbations and the growth of medium-sized or secondary cities in order to structure economic activities in the urban space and contribute to the development of the surrounding rural areas.
In terms of urban development, the first urban C2D supported the Urban Communities of Douala and Yaounde in the rehabilitation and improvement of their road networks and the opening up of neighbourhoods. The second urban C2D, while providing for the construction of a rainwater drainage network in the city of Douala, has also allocated resources to three major crossroads cities: Garoua for the northern region, Bafoussam for the west and Bertoua for the east.
